Matico Leaf: Peru's Natural Antibiotic

In the Peruvian Amazon, the Matico plant (Piper aduncum) has long been cherished as a natural remedy for wounds, inflammation, and digestive discomfort. Nicknamed the "Soldier's Herb," it became popular after a 19th-century Peruvian soldier reportedly used it to treat a battlefield injury.

Locals use matico leaves to make an herbal infusion for stomach ulcers and sore throats, or they crush the fresh leaves into a poultice and apply it directly to cuts, bites, and infections.

Recent studies confirm that Matico contains anti-inflammatory and antibacterial compounds — bridging Indigenous knowledge and modern science.

🌱 Preparation Tip: Steep a few dried Matico leaves in hot water for 10 minutes. For wounds, mash fresh leaves into a paste and apply externally.

Matico is still sold today in markets around Lima and Iquitos, and is often one of the first herbs taught to apprentices of Amazonian plant medicine.
